I am not a hockey fan but support our area team the "Canes"...read this
morning that they won using the "hat trick". I have heard this term often
but have no idea what is is...could someone explain precisely what the "hat
trick" is and how it happens?

A hat trick by definition is when a single player scores three goals
during a single game. There is also a 'natural' hat trick, when not
only does the player score three goals - but three goals in a row.

As to where the term originates, I'll leave that for others to answer
(I'm not sure)

Cricket.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat_trick

From the article: "A player accomplishes a Gordie Howe hat trick by scoring
a goal, getting an assist, and getting into a fight, all in the same game."
